Alexander Dzasokhov

Biography

Alexander Dzasokhov, Deputy Chairman of the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO, was born in Ordzhonikidze (now Vladikavkaz) in 1934. Graduated from the North Caucasus Mining and Metallurgy Institute. Holds a Ph.D. degree in History, Doctor of Sciences (Politics).

In 1957–1986, he worked in senior positions in the Ordzhonikidze city council of the Young Communist League of the North Ossetia Autonomous SSR, the Central Committee of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League, the USSR Committee of Youth Organizations, and the Soviet Committee of Solidarity with Nations of Asia and Africa.

1986–1988, served as Soviet Ambassador to Syria.

After returning to the Soviet Union, he worked as the first secretary of the North Ossetia Regional Communist Committee, then as Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs of the USSR Supreme Soviet. He was elected Secretary of the Central Committee and Member of the Politburo.

In 1993–1998, Deputy of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, in 1998–2005, President of North Ossetia-Alania, in 2005–2010, member of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.

Member of the Board of Trustees, Vice President of the Russian International Affairs Council.

In 2012, he was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO.

He has the diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.
