Sergei Lavrov

Biography

Sergei Lavrov was born in 1950 in Moscow. He graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations of the USSR Foreign Ministry (1972).

In the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1972. He worked at the Soviet Embassy in Sri Lanka and as a member of the Soviet mission to the UN in New York.

From 1988 to 1990, Deputy Head of the Department of International Economic Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 1990–1992, Head of the Department of International Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Head of the Department of International Organizations and Global Problems at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 1992–1994, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. 1994–2004, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN in New York.

Since 2004, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. In the same year, by the decision of the Government of the Russian Federation, he was appointed Chairman of the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO.

He has the diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.

He speaks English, French, and Senegalese.
