Safety of journalists and the issue of impunity

On International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists we call on UNESCO to condemn physical violence against the Russian journalists.

On October, 5 the special services of the Republic of Cyprus forcefully captured “Rossiyskaya Gazeta” correspondent Alexander Gasyuk, beating him which resulted in bodily harm. Afterwards Mr. Gasyuk was unceremoniously deported from the Republic of Cyprus under a false pretext.

On October, 31 the group of “Izvestia” journalists covering the situation in Donetsk was hit by the Ukrainian forces shelling. As a result, three Russian correspondents have been injured.

In accordance with Decision of the 216th Executive Board “Safety of journalists and the issue of impunity” the UNESCO Director-General is requested in line with Resolution on the “Condemnation of violence against journalists”, to condemn the killing and physical violence against journalists without distinction.
