Second Award Ceremony of the UNESCO-Russia Mendeleev International Prize in the Basic Sciences

On December 13, the Second Award Ceremony of the UNESCO-Russia Mendeleev International Prize in the Basic Sciences was held in the Russian Academy of Sciences in a solemn atmosphere.  

It is the most significant award of all UNESCO’s joint prizes with foreign countries, with a fund of US $500,000, each winner receives half of this amount.

Mr. Chernyshenko, Deputy Prime Minister of Russian Federation and Ms. Brito, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences, presented the high award, a gold medal and a special diploma to two outstanding chemists Ms. I.P.Beletskaya, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor of the Chemistry Department of the Moscow State University and to Mr. K.A.Müllen, Honorary Director of the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research.

The Ceremony was attended by representatives of about 50 countries, including 26 foreign ambassadors accredited in Russia.

Russia pays priority attention to the development of basic sciences and remains open to the scientific community. The Mendeleev Prize is an explicit example! Science has no borders!
