UNESCO Invites Artists to Antarctica

The little-trodden Antarctic realms still appeal to many people these days. Not only the scientists and travelers, but artists, too.

Artists as well as scientists and explorers still show great interest in almost unknown Antarctic territories. The Second Antarctic Biennale in March 2019 will be dedicated to the discoverers of the Icy Continent, Faddey Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev.

During their artistic voyage as part of the First Antarctic Biennale, the participants landed on the Antarctic shore 12 times. They carried out over 20 artistic projects, including performances, installations, photography exhibitions and musical experiments.

“Mobilis in mobile”, the motto of Capitan Nemo, became one of the crucial ideas behind
the project: installations that were
quick to assemble and easy to dismantle highlighted the frailty of Antarctica and left no human trace on the continent.
