The main goal of the Global Geoparks Program is to create a model of sustainable economic development of the territory based on the use of geological entities of international importance in connection with nature, culture and other aspects of human life. This is its fundamental difference from the UNESCO World Heritage Program, aimed at protecting unique Sites only. In addition, the Status of a UNESCO Geopark is being awarded for a period of four years. In order to prolong the Status, it needs to go through an additional check.
