UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay strongly condemned the brutal murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The authorities of Saudi Arabia have officially confirmed the death of a journalist.
"I strongly condemn the assassination of Jamal Khashoggi," said the Director-General of UNESCO.
"The killing of Jamal Khashoggi reminds us of the need to fight for press freedom, which is essential to democracy. Accountability for these crimes is non-negotiable. I urge the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into this crime and bring its perpetrators to justice," Ms. Azoulay said.
UNESCO contributes to ensuring the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a number of other measures, in particular the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
On November 2, UNESCO will celebrate the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.
