The Ministry of Culture and the National Committee of ICOMOS made a cooperation agreement

The Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the non-governmental organization "Russian National Committee of ICOMOS" made a cooperation agreement. This was announced on Wednesday during a plenary session of the Second International Academic Symposium "World cultural heritage monuments in Russia - problems and prospects" taken place in Veliky Novgorod.

"The Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Russian National Committee of ICOMOS made an agreement. The Ministry of Culture reckons on an effective cooperation with ICOMOS Russia", said Pavel Mosolov, the Deputy Director of the Department for Cultural Heritage Protection of the Ministry of Culture.

The cooperation will aim to protect and promote cultural heritage sites in Russia. During this session Mosolov and the president of the Russian National Committee of ICOMOS Alexander Kuznetsov exchanged the signed agreements. "Over the entire history of ICOMOS in our country it's an unprecedented event", said Natalya Almazova, the Vice President of the Russian National Committee of ICOMOS.

The Second International Academic Symposium of the Russian National Committee of ICOMOS "World cultural heritage monuments in Russia - problems and prospects" takes place in Veliky Novgorod in September 19-21. In this event participate more than 200 specialists from different regions of Russia, as well as Heads of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), presidents of National Committees of ICOMOS, representatives of the Ministry of Culture of Russia and the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO, the Union of Restorers of Russia, the Union of Architects of Russia, the Novgorod region government and officials from other regions.

Specialists will discuss issues concerning world heritage sites, historical cities of Russia within the world heritage system. Also they will touch on topics about cultural landscape and archaeological studies.

The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) was founded in 1965 and now it is an official international consultant and a responsible authority of UNESCO for world heritage issues. ICOMOS experts will make decisions about putting sites on the World Heritage List according their category.

Russia has been fully engaged in activity of the Council since its founding. In 1978 the Vth General Assembly of ICOMOS took place in Moscow and Suzdal. In 2015 was registered the Russian National Committee of ICOMOS that became a lead initiator and organizer of many events, including the First International Academic Symposium "Cultural Heritage - a meeting point for dialogue" taken place in Yaroslavl in 2017.
