International Youth Forum "Water and the World Heritage"

The opening ceremony of the International Youth Forum "Water and the World Heritage" was held in the All-Russian Children's Center "Orlyonok" ("Eaglet") in June 2, 2012.

The Forum was attended by 90 children in all. Foreign delegations were the CIS countries including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan; Latvia and Estonia represented the Baltic States; there were also the delegations from Abkhazia and South Ossetia among the participants of the Forum.

The Russian delegation was represented by nine regions including Moscow, St. Petersburg, Omsk, Yakutsk, Nizhny Tagil, Kazan and Ufa as well as by the delegates from the orphanage – Krasnoselskaya boarding school. All the participants represented the UNESCO Associated Schools.

Mr. Alexander Dzasokhov, Deputy Chair of the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO as well as the UNESCO representatives Ms. Livia Saldari, International Coordinator of the ASP Network, and Ms. Carmela Quin, Assistant Programme Specialist of the Communication, Education and Partnerships Unit, took part in the opening ceremony.

During the Forum the presentation of the Kavkazskiy Biosphere Reserve located in immediate proximity to "Orlyonok" was made.

Master classes in the World Natural and Cultural Heritage as well as in the Marine and Underwater Heritage were given by the experts.

Ms. T.P.Polischuk and Ms. E.G.Ivanova, experts of the State Unitary Enterprise “Vodokanal of St. Petersburg”, hold games aimed at enhancing awareness of responsibility for the surrounding world.

Ms. Zh.A.Balonishnikova, expert of the International Hydrological Programme of UNESCO, and Mr. S.Sargsyan, natural sciences expert of the UNESCO Office in Alma-Ata, were invited to attend the final week of the Forum.

The countries’ national lounges gave the young delegates opportunity to learn more about the intangible heritage.

The program of the Forum was full of a variety of tours, contests and meetings.

A joint group of students and their tutors drew up a final document, which was presented by the students from St. Petersburg at the opening ceremony of the 36th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.
