In 2005, under the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO the Russian Committee for Bioethics (RCB) was established.
Chairman of the Committee is Academician R.V. Petrov (member of the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO).
It is composed of Russia's leading biologists, medics, philosophers, lawyers. Within its competence, the Committee provides expert advisory assessment of the ethical, legal, scientific and social problems in modern biology and medicine, studies laws in the field of bioethics, and formulates recommendations on relevant aspects of international and Russian law. Another function of the RCB is promoting public debate on bioethical issues through teaching in higher educational institutions, publications, conferences, work with media representatives, and consulting assistance in the establishment of bioethics committees in the neighboring countries.
