His contribution to the development of world science, culture, and education is so important and significant in a great variety of knowledge areas, such as physics, astronomy, chemistry, geology, meteorology, navigation, Russian history and grammar, political economy and population science, that the vast amount and encyclopedic nature of his research and discoveries continue to command the respect and amazement of many generations through the centuries.
15 years ago, Irina Bokova participated in the Beijing Conference on women's rights. Today she is the first woman to be Director-General of UNESCO. However in her message on the occasion of International Women's Day, Irina Bokova said it is too early to talk about winning the fight for gender equality.
